Anita H. Clayton, MD, is Professor of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences and is Medical Director of the Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic and Center for Psychiatric Clinical Research at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, Charlottesville. Dr. Clayton is board certified in psychiatry and neurology. Her research interests include psychopharmacology, sexual dysfunctions/disorders, and conditions associated with the female reproductive cycle.
Dr. Clayton earned her medical degree at the University of Virginia School of Medicine and completed her internship and residency in the Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry at the University of Virginia Hospital, both in Charlottesville. She has served as General Medical Officer at Great Lakes Naval Hospital in Great Lakes, Illinois, and Staff Psychiatrist at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.
Dr. Clayton is a member of several professional societies, including the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, American Psychiatric Association, and the North American Society for Psychosocial Obstetrics and Gynecology. She received the 2009 Faculty Teaching Award from the University of Virginia Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences. Dr. Clayton is a consulting/contributing editor for the Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy, the Journal of Sexual Medicine, and the Journal of Women's Health. She has written many abstracts, book chapters, and presentations, and her work is published in such peer-reviewed journals as Obstetrics and Gynecology, Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, and the Journal of Sexual Medicine.
